My 6 Favorite Lightroom Tricks
If you're a photographer, you know that Lightroom Classic is a total game-changer. It's not just a powerful photo editor—it's a complete workflow solution that can save you countless hours. To help you fall in love with it as much as I have, I want to share my favorite tricks and tools that are worth their virtual weight in gold. Let's dive in!
1. Using the White Balance Dropper Tool 🌡️
This little tool is a powerhouse for correcting colors and skin tones. When your photo has a color cast (for example, if it's too warm or too cool), you can use the dropper tool to find a neutral grey or white area in the image. Lightroom will then automatically adjust the colors in the entire image to neutralize the cast.
2. Using Presets 🎨
A preset is simply a collection of editing steps that you've saved. Instead of manually adjusting all the sliders, you can apply an entire look to your image with just one click. You can create your own presets or use ones you've purchased.
While presets can't fix everything, they can get you 90% of the way there! They can save you a ton of time, especially once you have a collection of your favorites.
My Ultimate Preset Toolkit includes three of my favorite presets to help you get started! You can use them as a foundation and make your own tweaks to create a unique style.
3. Batch Editing with the Sync Button 🔄
This tool is a lifesaver! If you have a set of photos taken in the same location with similar lighting, you can edit one, then apply those same settings to all the others in a single click.
Here's how:
In the Develop Module, select your first edited photo.
Then, select all the other images you want to apply those edits to.
The "Previous" button will change to "Sync." Click it, and a dialogue box will pop up.
Select the edits you want to copy over, and you're done! It's a huge time-saver.
4. Applying Settings Upon Import 📥
This is an extension of the previous tip and one of Lightroom's best time-saving features! You can set Lightroom to automatically apply a preset to your images as they're imported from your memory card.
This means you can import your images, and Lightroom will apply the edits while you grab a coffee. When you come back, the "heavy lifting" is already done! All you have to do is make any minor tweaks you want.
5. Using Keywords to Organize Your Library 🏷️
Keywords are a crucial but often overlooked organizational tool in Lightroom Classic. They are tags you add to your photos to make them easy to find later. You can apply keywords upon import or add them later in the Library Module. Think about things like:
Who is in the photo? (e.g., "Jane," "Grandpa")
What is the photo of? (e.g., "Birthday," "Halloween," "Beach")
Where was it taken? (e.g., "Paris," "California")
Using keywords helps you find a specific photo in seconds, even if you have thousands of images in your catalog.
6. Smart Collections 🧠
Smart Collections are one of the most powerful and underutilized features in Lightroom. They are essentially automated albums that automatically collect photos based on criteria you set.
For example, you can create a Smart Collection that automatically pulls every photo you've rated with 5 stars and has the keyword "family." This is a fantastic way to keep your photos organized without any manual effort.
